Fibroid Tumor Causes Symptoms and Treatment

A fibroid is a mass of tissue that is formed in the pelvis. A fibroid is a non-cancerous and benign tumor. It may be formed in any part of the pelvis, but, are seen most prominently in the uterus. The fibroid formed in the uterus are known as uterine fibroid tumor. Fibroid tumors are found only in women after puberty. Also, they commonly occur in women between the age group 25 to 35 years. They are rarely found in women who are below 20 years of age. After formation, fibroid tumors constantly keep on growing. During menopause, the fibroid stops growing and sometimes even disappears. What are the causes of fibroid tumors then?

Fibroid Tumors Causes
The exact cause of fibroid tumors are unknown. However, doctors believe that malfunction or abnormal function of estrogen (a female hormone) can result in the growth of fibroids. Therefore, if a woman takes contraceptives or supplements containing estrogen, there are higher chances for growth of fibroid tumors. Similarly, during pregnancy, the body of females naturally produce excess estrogen which can also result in formation of fibroids. What are the signs and symptoms of fibroid tumors? Let us have a look.

Fibroid Tumors Symptoms
Excessive bleeding is the classical symptom of fibroid tumors. Heavy bleeding is observed during all the 4-5 days of menstruation. Sometimes it is also seen that the periods last longer. Due to excess blood loss, anemia can be developed in women. Sometimes, bleeding or spotting is also observed between two menstrual cycles. The following are the other symptoms of fibroid tumors:

Abdominal pain
Swelling of the abdomen
Backache
Pain in hips

Sometimes infertility can also be one of the signs or complication of fibroid tumor. Presence of fibroid does not directly affect pregnancy but can causes problems in it. If the fibroid is located in the uterus, it can occupy the space meant for the baby. On the other hand, the fibroids developed in other parts of the female reproductive system can even cause an obstacle in the path of the fertilized egg when reaching its proper place. Most of the times, fibroid tumors are smaller in size and disappear at menopause. However, they need to be treated if they start causing problems. Following are the different fibroid tumors treatments available to treat fibroids.

Fibroid Tumors Treatment
The location and size of the fibroid tumor and the age of the woman play an important role in deciding the treatment method to be adopted for fibroid tumors. If the fibroid develops during the time of menopause (between 43-45 years of age), there is hardly any necessity to treat it as it disappears after menopause. On the other hand, fibroids that are very small in size also do not need to be treated. They can be treated with medications. On the other hand, certain fibroid tumors are larger in size and are located in complicated places. Therefore, they need to be treated with the help of surgical procedures.

Myomectomy is the surgical procedure that is used for the removal of tumors. Although there are chances of blood loss, this is an effective technique. It is also very effective in treating multiple fibroids. If a woman develops a fibroid at an early age, there are higher chances of her getting it again. However, multiple Myomectomy can lead to problems and complications. Another surgery for fibroid tumors treatment is Hysterectomy. It is the complete removal of the uterus. Hysterectomy is undertaken only when the tumor creates problems with other organs due to its large size. Hysterectomy is also undertaken for women who do not wish to be pregnant again. Hysterectomy is also considered as an effective treatment for fibroid tumors. Sometimes, as an alternative for surgeries, certain drugs are taken for fibroid tumors treatment. However these drugs need to be taken regularly and failing to do so can result in making the tumor regain its original size. Read more on women's health.

In order to make fibroid tumors treatment effective, it is very essential to identify the symptoms as early as possible. There are no preventive measures to avoid fibroids. However, a woman should undertake regular check ups in order to spot and diagnose such abnormalities and treat them as soon as possible.

Symptoms of brain tumor

What is this condition?
A malignant brain tumor is a cancer of the brain. It's relatively common - slightly more so in men than in women - and may occur at any age. In adults, it most often strikes between ages 40 and 60. In children, the incidence of malignant brain tumors is generally highest before age 1 and then again between ages 2 and 12.
Malignant brain tumors are classified by the type of cancer cell. In adults, the most common tumors are gliomas and meningiomas. Usually, these tumors are located above the covering of the cerebellum - the area in the back of the brain that coordinates voluntary muscle movements. What causes it?
The cause of a malignant brain tumor is unknown.

What are its symptoms?
A malignant brain tumor causes changes in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) by invading and destroying tissues and causing compression of the brain, cranial nerves, and cerebral blood vessels; brain swelling; and increased intracranial pressure (pressure within the skull). Increased intracranial pressure causes many of this cancer's symptoms, although they vary with the tumor type, its location, and the degree of invasion.

Because symptoms usually develop gradually, brain tumors are commonly misdiagnosed.

How is it diagnosed?
In many cases, a brain tumor is diagnosed by performing a tissue biopsy (removing and analyzing a small portion of brain tissue) during stereotactic surgery. In this procedure, a head ring is affixed to the person's skull, and a device that removes tissue is guided to the tumor by a computed tomography scan (commonly called a CAT scan) or magnetic resonance imaging (commonly known as MRI).

The doctor will also take the persons history and assess his or her neurologic status; the doctor also may order skull X-rays, a brain scan, a CAT scan, MRI, and cerebral angiography (a study of the blood vessels in the brain). A spinal tap shows increased pressure and protein levels, decreased sugar levels and, occasionally, tumor cells in cerebrospinal fluid.

How is it treated?
Treatment seeks to reduce the size of inoperable tumors, reduce brain swelling and increased intracranial pressure, prevent further neurologic damage, and relieve other symptoms. The treatment method depends on the type of tumor, its sensitivity to radiation, and its location.

If the tumor's location permits, surgery is performed to remove the tumor. If the tumor is inoperable, treatment may include some combination of radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and drug therapy.

About pancoast tumor

Most people with lung cancer have one or more symptoms. However, the symptoms of lung cancer are similar to the symptoms of many other more common and less serious problems.

If you are concerned about your symptoms, talk to your doctor or nurse. Stage 3 lung cancer symptoms are variable since stage 3 lung cancer includes a wide spectrum of cancers. Symptoms due to cancer in the lungs such as a persistent cough, Lung cancer can cause a new cough or a change in a chronic cough.

The cough can be a dry or may produce sputum (phlegm). Shortness of breath, and repeated infections such as pneumonia or bronchitis, are common. Arm, shoulder and neck pain can be caused by a tumor in the top of the lungs (called Pancoast tumor).

Other symptoms can include weakening of the hand muscles (due to pressure on the nerve that stimulates the arm), a droopy eyelid, and blurred vision. Spread to areas such as the chest wall and diaphragm can result in pain in the chest, ribs, shoulders, and back. Tumors located near the airways can cause hemoptysis (coughing up blood) and wheezing. When the tumor involves areas such as the esophagus and other chest structures, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) and hoarseness can occur.

Pain in the back, chest, and ribs is common if a pleural effusion is present, and this can result in increasing shortness of breath. General symptoms of stage 3 lung cancer such as fatigue and weight loss may be present as well. If you have symptoms that suggest lung cancer, your doctor or nurse will perform a complete exam and a chest X-ray. If the chest X-ray shows a mass in your lung that could be a tumor, additional testing is performed.

This may include blood work and a CT scan of the lower neck, entire chest, and upper part of the abdomen. To confirm the diagnosis, you will need to have a piece of the tumor removed and examined (called a biopsy). If the chest X-ray shows a mass in your lung that could be a tumor, additional testing is performed. Klatskin Tumor Complete Information

Klatskin tumor aka Bile duct cancer is a type of liver cancer, in which malignant (cancerous) tumours grow in the bile ducts. It is also known as cholangiocarcinoma and is rare in the UK, only accounting for approximately 1% of cancers in the UK. The bile ducts are the tubes connecting the liver and gall bladder to the small intestine (small bowel). Bile is a fluid made by the liver and stored in the gall bladder. Its main function is to break down fats during their digestion in the small bowel. In people who have had their gall bladder removed, bile flows directly into the small intestine. The bile ducts and gall bladder are known as the biliary system.

The bile ducts transfer bile from the liver and gall bladder to the small intestine. Bile is a greenish-yellow digestive fluid produced by the liver that dissect the fat in the food we eat. Together the gall bladder and bile ducts are called the biliary system. Bile duct cancer is a malignant growth in the ducts that carry bile from the liver to the small intestine. Cancer of the bile duct is rare and is most prevalent in people ages 50 to 70. The tumor sometimes blocks the bile ducts, which can cause jaundice, clay-colored stools, itching, loss of appetite, weight loss, fever, chills or abdominal and back pain.

Klatskin tumor usually grow slowly and spread gradually. Hilar or Klatskin tumors are the most common bile duct cancers. These tumors are found where the right and left hepatic bile ducts meet. There is another form of this disease, the intrahepatic bile duct tumor, which does not block the main bile ducts. Bile duct cancer develops in a significant number of patients with diseases of the biliary tree, such as primary sclerosing cholangitis, intraductal gallstones, biliary tree strictures and choledochal cysts. People who have a chronic inflammatory bowel condition, known as ulcerative colitis.

Klatskin tumor are also at an increased risk of developing this type of cancer. The type of treatment that you are given will depend on a number of factors, including your general health, the position and size of the cancer in the bile duct. Surgery may be used to remove the cancer if it has not spread beyond the bile duct. Radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or both are also sometimes used to try to destroy any cancerous cells that remain, and prevent the cancer from returning. PDT uses a combination of laser light of a specific wavelength and a light-sensitive drug to destroy cancer cells.

GIST Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors Detailed Information

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) belong to a group of cancers known as squashy tissue sarcomas. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are a rare tumor of the gastrointestinal tract (1-3% of all gastrointestinal malignancies). GISTs can also initiate in the mesentery and omentum. Overall, GISTs are rare and rank a distant third in prevalence behind adenocarcinomas and lymphomas among the histologic types of gastrointestinal tract tumors. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are approximately same in males and females. GISTs arise in 10-20 per one million people; one out of 3-4 is malignant.

This makes GIST the most common type of sarcoma, which comprises more than 70 types of cancer, but in all forms constitutes less than 1% of all cancer. In the United States annually has been estimated to be 5,000-6,000. Some families with hereditary GISTs have been described, most cases are sporadic. GISTs arise with a higher than expected frequency in patients with type 1 neurofibromatosis. GISTs are also a feature of the rare carney triad, which is observed predominantly in young women. This triad consists of epithelioid gastric stromal tumors, pulmonary chondromas, and extra-adrenal paragangliomas.

Tumors usually occur from the intestinal tract with the most common locate being the stomach, followed by the tiny intestine, and the colon/rectum with rare cases arising in the esophagus. There are also tumors that appear to arise in the membranous tissue lining the wall of the stomach (peritoneum) or in a fold of such membranous tissue. There are also case reports of tumors arising in the appendix and/or pancreas. These tumors most commonly present with abdominal pain, bleeding or signs of intestinal obstruction. They spread most commonly to sites within the abdominal cavity and to the liver.

While there are rare cases of spread to the lungs and bone. GIST results from a change in one of two genes, KIT or PDGFR, which leads to continued increase and division of tumor cells. Treatment is with surgery. Patients who have disease that has spread are treated with surgery when possible and with imatinib mesylate (Gleevec, Glivec), a tyrosine kinase inhibitor that inhibits the KIT or PDGFR responsible for tumor growth. Systemic chemotherapy trials for the treatment of GISTs have almost totally been associated with poor results.
