Cancer is one of the most devastating and prominent diseases in the world. It is the cause of countless illness and deaths. The treatments for cancer are harsh. Chemotherapy and radiation are difficult procedures that wreck havoc on the body. Surgery is used to remove cancerous growths. This is also a severely invasive and traumatic procedure. One way of trying to prevent the need for this is to try and prevent cancer.

How does one try and prevent cancer? First, the most obvious method is to avoid certain substances that are known to cause cancer. These are namely carcinogenic substances such as tobacco, certain chemicals used in industrial cleaning and radon. Also, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun is imperative. Prolonged exposure, especially without proper sunscreen can cause the development of skin cancers.

Next, and perhaps most importantly is to develop a diet based on foods that will aid in the prevention of cancer. The way this is done is by picking foods that contain anti-oxidants. Antioxidants are the key to preventing cancer because cancer is often caused by oxidative damage. Free radicals in the body are formed by eating poor food, smoking, drinking excessive alcohol or living in an environment where pollutants in the form of smog, chemicals in the air or other unhealthy and minor pollutants invade your airspace and are inhaled and processed in the body. A diet high in antioxidants is key to preventing these pollutants from causing damage that in turn may lead to cancerous growth.

Antioxidants are powerful fighters in the cancer battle. The foods that contain the highest amounts of antioxidants are plant based. Foods with bright colors such as yellow peppers, red peppers, berries and oranges all contain powerful antioxidants. Other foods that contain powerful antioxidants and are key to preventing cancer are onions and garlic. These foods are not brightly colored, however they contain nutrients that are known to combat free radicals.

Aside from food such as berries, pepper, onions, there are also nuts. Nuts such as walnuts and almonds are very powerful. A diet that includes a handful of almonds a day is an excellent way of aiding in the prevention of many cancers. Along with nuts, you should consider mushrooms. Not the common mushrooms you see on the store shelves, but rather the more esoteric mushrooms such as Reishi and Shiitake. These mushrooms have been studied and have been found to have anti-tumor compounds.

The last consideration is what you should not eat, or eat less of. Primarily the foods that cause the most harm are animal products and sugars and refined foods. Most refined food that you find in the supermarkets is loaded with chemicals and perspectives that in addition to being of little or no nutritional value may actually cause illnesses. You should look to eat organic food. Cage free eggs, and other foods are chosen by those looking to eat foods that are free of growth hormones and antibiotics.

By limiting your intake of animal products and by increasing your intake of fresh vegetables and fruits that are high in antioxidants you stand a good chance of preventing cancer.
