Do Cell Phones Cause Cancer?

Ian James

We use cell phones everyday without thinking twice. They help us stay connected with the people we love, to help us stay organized, and to help us stay safe in the even of an emergency. But how would our usage of cells change if we were made aware of a serious health risk posed by their use? Experts are saying that the use of cells may increase your chances of developing cancer. More than 21,000 adults and 1,500 children are diagnosed with brain tumors every year, and researchers believe that some of these were caused by the use of cells.

Every time we use our cell, it is emitting radio frequency radiation. This radiation is not as damaging as the radiation from x-rays, but it can still affect our DNA. There has been animal studies that have shown that the radiation from cell usage can change the cells inside the brain. It is still up for debate whether or not these cell changes inside the brain will cause serious damage. However, one study that examined decades worth of research concluded that people who use a cell for more than 10 years are up to 30% more likely to develop a brain tumor than those who rarely use cell phones.

The biggest concern of scientist is that because cell phones are a newer phenomenon and because brain tumors can take years to develop, is that we won't see the connection between cell phones and cancer until it's too late. Children are in face more at risk then adults because a child's brain is thinner and contains more fluid than adult's brains. This means that a child's brain can more readily absorb the electricity. The brain surface that is exposed to radiation during cell phone usage is more than doubled in a child. Some countries have began issuing warnings about child cell phone use and the cancer connection.

In order to stay safe when it comes to using a cell, keep in mind these steps to help you stay safe from the cancer and cell phone connection. Put the cell on speaker because moving the phone away from your head drops exposure. If a speaker isn't right for you, use a wired headset. Unless you are using it, store your cell in a purse or bag. Don't try to use your phone when reception is bad. The weaker the signal, more radio frequency has to be used to boost the signal, which increase exposure. And lastly, protect the children by not letting them use cell phones next to their heads.
