How Long Does LH Surge Last? Trying to Become Pregnant

The whole idea of ovulation can be complicated. It isn't something someone usually thinks about until they are trying to become pregnant or trying to avoid it. One method for discovering the start of ovulation is following the LH surge and ovulation period.

This hormone tells the ovaries when to release the egg by surging up to four times the normal levels. You will find that the LH surge and ovulation period are always hand in hand, as it always precedes the monthly experience. This is why a number of couples end up purchasing an ovulation predictor kit and closely monitor the woman's LH levels. This lets them know when they can start producing a little more sexual excitement.

The LH surge and ovulation period is different for every woman. While everyone has a surge and then an ovulating period, the time frame always varies by woman, and sometimes even cycle to cycle. The actual ovulation period is also different, as it can occur anywhere from 12 to 48 hours after the LH surge.

This surge is very significant for couples trying to become pregnant. They have to figure out how long ovulation will be once the LH surge occurs. It tends to happen around day 14, especially if you are like the typical woman with a 28-day menstruation cycle. Predicting the LH surge becomes easier if an ovulation predictor kit is used. For instance, most women tend to experience ovulation 36 hours following the LH surge. The kit can be purchased at a drug store, and a woman should monitor the rates at the start of day 11, taken at the same time every afternoon. Another option is to have a blood test taken during your ovulation period. This is normally done if a couple is suspected to have infertility issues.

If you are desperately trying to become pregnant, your chances for conception increase if you have intercourse on the same day as the LH surge. You should continue this practice for the next two days, as it increases the odds for the sperm fertilizing the egg. Keeping track of your LH surge and ovulation period won't guarantee pregnancy, but it does increase your chances.
